My generation, the young people of today; we are the most privileged generation, we are the luckiest generation, and we are the most educated generation. We are also the most burdened generation. We are the most burdened generation because our potential has been exposed and with it we carry the weight of the expectations from the older generations, and even the younger ones. Heaviest of all we carry the weight of our own expectations.

We believe in the ideals of equality. We grew up believing in happily ever after and we have become addicted. We were raised with the priority of education and the lifestyle of access and excess. We were taught to believe that our thoughts, ideas, opinions, and feelings mattered, that we mattered and that we could do anything. We believed we were invincible, indestructible, undeniably in control of our lives and of our direction. We believed that our lives would be extraordinary and that that we would achieve greatness, do great things, go to great places, and meet great people.

Reality came crashing down on us when we were finally released out into the real world. The real world does not always start off with ounce upon a time and end with happily ever after. Life is hard and when you jump you also fall, sometimes onto the hard concrete. The real world is a scary place and you don’t receive an “A” for effort.

Life is all about choices; left or right, up or down, to turn a blind eye or to lend a helping handing. Some choices are bigger than others and some choices hold more value. While having the ability to make our own choices is a luxury, it is a luxury that we cannot fully appreciate when we are overwhelmed by all the options and possibilities. Our fears stem from our insecurities and our insecurities stem from our inability to know what we want or where we want to go.

We become so fearful of failure that we play it safe. But playing it safe does not stop bad things from happening; it only stops us from truly living. Kurt Vonnegut couldn’t have said it any better when he said “we are what we pretend to be, so we have to be careful what we pretend to be.” It is the choices we make that determine who we are. Every day we create who we are by what we do and what we think and how we behave.

The world is changing, it’s evolving every day; it is scientifically proven that nothing stays the same, that everything is constantly in a state of motion. We wish we had the answers to everything and it frustrates us to no end that we can’t flip to the last page and read the ending first. Our futures are foggy and we are realizing that there are more turns in the road then we thought there would be. The only thing we are sure of is that we want our lives, our existence to matter.
